marv on record is a cool little tech blog that recently got a lot of page views (143,000 total over the life of the blog; this last week: 118,000) for a good little post (part 1, part 2, clarifications) he wrote about the Napster Subscription service. (He also has a good article about AllofMP3.com*) He says this re-encoding of the DRMed material is legal. I don’t think it is. This guy agrees.
A “Download” is a Track that you may save to the hard drive of your personal computer and play back as many times as you want for so long as your subscription is current. You may make an unlimited number of Downloads while your subscription is current. You may copy each Download to up to two additional personal computers that you own (i.e. a total of 3 copies). If you wish to burn Downloads to CDs or transfer them to compatible portable devices (other than using the “Napster To Go” Service described below) you will need to pay for them as Purchased Tracks (per the terms described above). You may not share Downloads with anyone else. Napster automatically renews your rights to all of your Downloads at the beginning of each Subscription Month (as defined below) so long as your subscription remains current.
I can testify that this WinAmp thing works (as described in part 2), however, it is a bit finicky and WinAmp will lock up (integer division by zero) unless you go into the settings (Ctrl-P) and go to Plug-ins and Output and reselect the Out-Lame plug-in as your output. Next you must make sure that WinAmp knows how long each track is by actually looking at each track (even the hidden ones below that you have to scroll down to see). To make this go faster I resize the playlist window bigger. You CANNOT click in the playlist and select a song. Then press Play and hope it doesn’t lock up. I am using W2K.
Update: I said at the * above: “he gets it wrong on pricing, just like this guy, tho.” I was wrong. I thought I remembered that it was just the OEEX class that was $0.02/MB, but I went into AllofMP3.com Explorer and ordered an OE class and it was $0.02/MB.
