David Bercot is having the sermons (two of them) this Sunday.

    Coffee is essential.

    I have second cousins I didn’t know I had.

I am taking 7 1/2 credits; normal load is 6.

The students and teachers are all awesome!

Dial-up internet is slow. Slower than my 6 Mbps Cable at home.

Microsoft Encarta + Offline Wikipedia (+ TomeRaider) + The SWORD Project + MemoWare (especially Religion section) is awesome!

More thoughts to come, including essays, etc that I have written for classes…

Quote of the day: “You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” -Jesus, Matthew 23:24, found in my reading for the New Testament Survey class

20 years ago, dad was working at Choice Books (a Christian book distributor) as a sales manager. One of the executives mentioned to dad that Thomas Nelson Publishers was a good company. Dad did a bit of research and bought Thomas Nelson stock. He bought at less than $3. The stock has gone through 2 splits since then. The stock closed Friday at $24.66. A private firm has announced a leveraged buyout of Thomas Nelson at a price of $29.85 in cash, 21% premium over Friday’s price. That’s an annualized return of 199%+ factoring the splits.

Buy good companies, with good management and a good vision, and you will be ahead of the gimmicky-guesswork trading all the time.

Anne van der Bijl, better known to most as Brother Andrew and founder of Open Doors, the international organization supporting persecuted Christians, is convinced that the number of Muslims involved in suicide bombings will increase in the coming years. Andrew has visited Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian areas regularly since the early 1980’s, encouraging the Christians and speaking with radical Muslims about the Gospel. He describes the militant Muslims as deeply depressed.

“They are facing insurmountable problems: they will never be able to defeat Israel and the United States militarily, and their faith makes it very difficult for them to enter Paradise,” he says. “Muslims know that they can only be saved by good works, but they also know that they do more evil deeds than good. Many Muslims are convinced that they will end in Hell when they die.”

They also have to admit that Allah does not answer their prayers. The Koran also shows them no way to be saved. Together, that leads many radical Muslims to choose death in Jihad, the holy war, because that is the only direct way to Paradise.

“They see no reason to live, so choose the only reason to die,” he said, addressing the 900 attendees of the Open Doors Day in Niedernhausen, Germany, on November 26th, the 50th anniversary of Open Doors Germany.

HAMAS, HIZBOLLAH, PLO: IMMENSE INTEREST IN THE GOSPEL
“Unless we Christians go to the Muslims and tell them that they do not have to die because Jesus died for their sins too, the dramatic situation in the Near East, Iraq and Afghanistan will not change,” he said, reminding Christians of their responsibility. In many encounters with leaders of Hamas, Hizbollah and the PLO, he regularly senses a great interest in the message of Christianity. “I have given thousands of Bibles to radical Muslims, and no-one has ever refused. I have also often spoken with them about Jesus Who died for the sins of the world, and nobody has killed me for it.”

    BE AN EXAMPLE, DON’T DISCUSS
Andrew called on Christians to show more courage and mercy towards Muslims, who are desperately seeking meaning in life. Many Christians have resigned in the face of the Muslim challenge.

“Muslims do not believe, as we do, that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He poured out His blood on the cross for the sins of the world. But that is exactly the answer we must give them in their situation.” Christians should seek contact with Muslims, and tell them the Good News in love. “We will never win the encounter with Islam through discussions or sermons. We have to go and show them how Jesus can change people.”

I have always struggled to figure out what the make and model a motherboard or another piece of computer hardware is so that I can download the proper drivers for it. I had to read tiny little numbers (serial numbers, part numbers that weren’t always there, etc) and Google them with uncertain results.

No longer! I have found two great little tools that display everything you ever wanted to know about a computer and more. In composite they display all the details about the hardware, plus the software you have installed, plus all the serial numbers for the software you have installed, etc, etc.

The first is ASTRA32 and the second is Belarc Advisor. Both are totally free for personal use. I highly recommend them. I was just ripping apart (and putting back together) some computers (and going through driver travails in the process) and was reminded of these little gems. (The problem is I had to search through my multi-GB download folder to find them.) With this post, I’ll now know where to go to find them. This blog has become a resource to myself when I try to remember stuff. (”When did we take that trip?” “What was the date on this/that event?”) I’m sure my grandkids will find reading this blog amusing, as well. “Wasn’t Grandpa a funny/weird guy!!”

Reposted from 9/2/2005: I just found several more great utilites to identify that hardware:
    CPU-z
    BIOS Wizard
    CTBIOS 1.5
    AMI Motherboard Identification Utility

This site has been temporarily given to the NSA.

We would like to take this moment to thank Hans Mast for his valiant defense of President Bush and the Republican party. We have heard him defend our values, like protection of privacy, over the his very own phone. Thank you Hans and we hope you like the angelic picture we copied from your hard drive.

Remember if you complain about this the terrorists win.

Edited by the Real Hans to add: Yup. I got hacked social-engineered. It was my rascally younger brother Benji; I had remained signed in on my home computer.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion [Sounds like AIDS to me, eh?].

    Romans 1:24-27 (NIV)

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.

    1 Peter 2:13-14 (NIV)

For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

    Romans 13:3-4 (NIV)

Virginians, the state Senate and House of Delegates have both approved a Consitutional amendment that bans gay marriages. Call your state senators and house members and thank them for voting for this measure (if they indeed have). This November, it will be on a referendum placed before you, the state’s residents. Scripture clearly says that homosexual relations are wrong and that the government has a responsibility to punish those who do wrong. The state is asking us whether this amendment should be added to the Constitution. I think it is clear what the right response to this question is. I hope to see you at the polls.

    Update: Text of the amendment:

That only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions.

This Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage. Nor shall this Commonwealth or its political subdivisions create or recognize another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage.
