Here’s a new McCain ad on immigration:

I disagree and have disagreed with the anti-immigrant wing of the Republican Party on immigration. Thus it was a pleasant surprise to have a Presidential candidate that is reasonable on immigration policy.

I’ve always been a bit flummoxed that some of those that call themselves conservatives don’t believe in the free market economy when it comes to jobs. I believe in the free market economy of jobs. I believe immigration strengthens the economy of those already here by bringing in unskilled labor from Latin countries which frees up the ones already here to take higher paying jobs. I believe immigration strengthens the American work ethic by bringing in people like Indians and Hispanics that work harder than we do, thus making the competition of harder workers more apparent. With the global economy, their hard work is already competition to us, American workers just don’t see it as up close and personal, prodding increased efficiency. Bringing them here brings competition. Competition is good for efficiency and for the American economy. This is a fundamental tenet of free market economies.

America is a country of immigrants; my family originally came from Germany more than 100 years. Let’s build upon that tradition of immigrants and not hypocritically keep other people out now that we’ve made it.

I would also like to take this “rule of law” issue to task. I support the rule of law. I find things like local police departments refusing to enforce federal immigration laws absurd in the extreme. However, to argue that because something is the law now, we first need to enforce that law, and then change the law to something better is absurd. It’s like saying in the Civil War era that, yes, laws allowing slavery are wrong, but we should respect the rule of law, so first we should punish the runaway slaves, but then change the law to allow for emancipation. It simply doesn’t make sense. If our immigration laws are not sensible now, we should change them to something sensible. Our policy and lawmaking goal should not be some childish “victory” over illegal immigrants, but it should be what is in the best interests of the people of the United States of America.
